WHAT IT FEELS LIKE

What this can feel like

  • A heaviness that does not lift, no matter how much you sleep.
  • Things you used to enjoy feel flat, like the colour has drained out of them.
  • You pull away from people, then feel worse for pulling away.
  • A harsh inner voice narrates everything you do, and it is never kind.
  • Concentrating, deciding, even answering a text feels like lifting something heavy.
  • You go through the motions, but you feel numb, or far away from your own life.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE IT

You are not lazy, and this is not weakness

The numbness and heaviness are not a character flaw. They are often a system protecting you: a mind and body conserving energy after carrying too much for too long.

Shutting down is what a nervous system does when pushing through stops working. That is not failure. It is a signal.

And a system that learned to shut down can, gently and gradually, come back online.

THE MECHANISM

Why depression is so hard to climb out of

Depression is not a choice, and it is not solved by trying harder. Part of what makes it so stubborn is a loop that feeds itself:

01

Energy drops

Everything costs more effort, so you do less.

02

You withdraw

Plans get cancelled. People get kept at a distance.

03

Life narrows

Fewer moments of connection, meaning, or small wins reach you.

04

The weight grows

Mood sinks further, and the next step costs even more.

The loop is not your fault, and you do not have to break it alone. Therapy works by interrupting it gently, in steps sized to the energy you actually have.

HOW WE HELP

How we help with depression

There is no single fix for depression, and the right approach depends on what sits underneath it. Here is how we work with it.

  • EMDR: when the heaviness is rooted in past experiences, helps the brain reprocess what still weighs on you.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy: when depression is tangled up with loneliness, loss, or relationships, works with the emotions and attachments underneath.
  • Somatic Experiencing: when you feel numb or shut down, works with the body to help your system gently come back online.

Your counsellor helps you find the fit, rather than leaving you to choose alone.

IN SESSION

What working together looks like

We start small, on purpose. Early sessions are not about fixing everything. They are about being met where you are, understanding your particular version of this, and finding steps sized to your energy.

You do not have to perform being okay, and you do not have to dig into the past before you are ready. Nothing gets pushed.

Over time, many people find the weight starts to shift: not all at once, but enough that life begins to reach them again.

WHEN TO REACH OUT

When to reach out

You do not need to be at your lowest to deserve support, and you do not need a reason that sounds good enough. If the heaviness is shaping your days, that is reason enough.

If you also want to explore medication, your family doctor is the right place for that conversation, and therapy can work alongside it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you reach out

Does therapy actually help with depression?

Many people find that therapy helps the weight begin to shift: understanding what is underneath it, rebuilding in small steps, and no longer carrying it alone. There are no guarantees and progress varies, but depression is one of the most common reasons people come to counselling.

How long will it take?

There is no fixed number of sessions, and with depression the early goal is steadiness, not speed. Some people notice shifts within weeks, others work over a longer stretch. Your counsellor will talk openly with you about what a realistic path looks like.

Is it depression or just sadness?

Sadness usually connects to something and moves through. What people describe as depression tends to linger, flatten everything, and stop tracking to events. We cannot diagnose anyone from a webpage, but if the heaviness has stayed for weeks and is shaping your life, it is worth talking to someone.

What if I have no reason to feel this way?

Depression does not need a reason you can point to, and a good life on paper does not disqualify you from struggling. Needing a good enough excuse to get support is part of how depression keeps people stuck. You do not need one.

Do I need medication?

That is a decision for you and your physician, not something we prescribe or advise on. Therapy can help on its own, and it can also work alongside medication. We are happy to work as part of a wider care team.

What does it cost, and is it covered?

Sessions are private pay, and many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor. We can walk you through the details and direct billing on a free call.

Can I do this online?

Yes. We offer virtual sessions across British Columbia. On the days when leaving the house feels like too much, being able to meet from home matters.
