WHAT IT FEELS LIKE

What this can feel like

  • Your thoughts race ahead to everything that could go wrong, and you cannot slow them down.
  • Your body stays tense and wired: a tight chest, a racing heart, shallow breath, a stomach in knots.
  • You lie awake at night while your mind runs the same loops.
  • Small decisions feel overwhelming, and you second-guess the ones you make.
  • You are exhausted from being on alert, but you cannot seem to switch it off.
  • You avoid certain places, people, or situations because the worry is too much.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE IT

You are not broken, and this is not weakness

Anxiety is not a character flaw. It is an alarm system doing its job too well.

At some point your nervous system learned that staying alert kept you safe. Now it struggles to stand down, even when the danger has passed. That makes sense.

It also means anxiety is something that can shift. A system that learned to brace can also learn to settle.

THE MECHANISM

Why anxiety sticks around

Anxiety is physical because it is chemical. When your brain senses threat, it releases the fight-or-flight chemistry that speeds your heart, tightens your chest, and knots your stomach. The symptoms are real, and they are your body preparing to protect you.

What keeps anxiety going is usually a loop:

01

A trigger

A situation, a thought, or a body sensation sets off the alarm.

02

The alarm

Your system floods with stress chemistry. Your heart races, your thoughts spiral.

03

Avoidance

You step away, cancel, or distract. It is the natural move.

04

Short-term relief

The relief feels like proof the threat was real. The alarm grows more sensitive.

Each pass tightens the loop. Therapy works by interrupting it: helping your system learn, in real time, that it can settle without escaping.

MANY FORMS

The many forms anxiety takes

Anxiety shows up in different ways, and you may recognize more than one.

01

Generalized worry

Worry that attaches to everything, from work to health to the people you love. It often comes with restlessness, tension, and trouble sleeping, and it rarely takes a day off.

02

Panic

Sudden waves of intense fear with strong physical symptoms: a pounding heart, dizziness, feeling unable to breathe. Many people start to fear the attacks themselves, which keeps the cycle going.

03

Social anxiety

An intense fear of being watched, judged, or embarrassed. It can make meetings, gatherings, or even a phone call feel like a performance you cannot afford to fail.

04

Health anxiety

Every sensation becomes a signal that something might be wrong. Checking and reassurance help for a moment, then the worry returns and asks for more.

HOW WE HELP

How we help with anxiety

There is no single fix for anxiety, and the right approach depends on you and what sits underneath it. Here is how we work with it.

  • Somatic Experiencing: works with your body to help an over-alert nervous system settle.
  • EMDR: when anxiety is rooted in past experiences, helps the brain reprocess what keeps it on alert.
  • Observed and Experiential Integration: a gentle, visually guided way to ease the charge held around difficult memories.

Your counsellor helps you find the fit, rather than leaving you to choose alone.

IN SESSION

What working together looks like

We start where you are. Early sessions focus on helping you feel steadier: understanding your particular pattern of anxiety, and building tools you can use when it spikes.

You set the pace. You do not have to dig into the past before you are ready, and nothing gets pushed. Over time, if it helps, we can gently work with what sits underneath the worry.

The aim is not to erase every anxious feeling. It is to help anxiety stop running the show.

WHEN TO REACH OUT

When to reach out

You do not need to be at your lowest to deserve support. If anxiety is shaping your days, your sleep, or your choices, that is reason enough.

If you also want to explore medication, your family doctor is the right place for that, and therapy can work alongside it. And if you are ever in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out to 9-8-8 (call or text, any time) or call 911.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you reach out

Does therapy actually help with anxiety?

Many people find that therapy helps them understand their anxiety and respond to it differently, so it has less grip over time. There are no guarantees and progress varies, but anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to counselling, and it is very workable.

How long will it take?

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some people feel steadier within a few, others work over a longer stretch, especially when anxiety is tied to deeper experiences. Your counsellor will talk openly with you about what a realistic path looks like.

Do I need medication?

That is a decision for you and your physician, not something we prescribe or advise on. Therapy can help on its own, and it can also work alongside medication. We are happy to work as part of a wider care team.

What does it cost, and is it covered?

Sessions are private pay, and many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor. We can walk you through the details and direct billing on a free call.

Can I do this online?

Yes. We offer virtual sessions across British Columbia, and many people find online counselling for anxiety just as effective, and often easier to fit into a full life.

Why does anxiety cause physical symptoms?

Anxiety is your body's threat response. When the alarm goes off, stress chemistry speeds your heart, tightens your muscles, and changes your breathing so you are ready to react. The symptoms are real and can be intense. New or unexplained physical symptoms are always worth checking with your doctor.

Is it normal to feel anxious a lot?

Anxiety itself is normal and useful. It is part of how humans stay safe. It becomes worth attention when it stays switched on, shaping your sleep, your choices, and your days. If that sounds familiar, you are far from alone, and it is one of the most common reasons people reach out.
